Top 10 Blog Posts of the Week (May 2nd - May 8th)

top posts of the week

I believe there are way too many amazing blog posts that go unnoticed online because of the bombardment we receive from company blogs.  You know what I’m talking about: Mashable, TechCrunch, Read Write Web, and many other.  They hoard the Twitter waves and are the posts that get retweeted the most.  Sure they may be good posts, but I want to see personal bloggers succeed!

This is a list of the top 10 blog posts of the week.  We have not included major company blogs and tried to help you discover as many new blogs as possible.  We did include Leo from Zen Habits and Brian from Copy Blogger because we feel they don’t fall in the category of the Mashable’s and Tech Crunch’s.  Once Viralogy.com fully launches, our algorithm will be in full affect and we’ll be able to feature the best content online from the best people you’ve never heard of.

Here are the Top Ten Blog Posts of this week:

1. A Brief, Incomplete, and mostly wrong history of programming languages

James Iry post

The Underdog:

Today’s top post of the week comes from someone you most likely have not heard of.  He uses a .blogspot for his blog, he has less than 182 followers on Twitter, and yet, he completely took this week by storm with this post.  I’m not a developer, so I don’t really get it; but it looks like he hit it well with the developer community.  Way to go James!

2. How to Make Gmail Your Ultimate Productivity Center

Zen Habits post

I disagree with:

Point #5 - Twitter for Gmail.  Twitter is honestly one of the greatest things to happen in my life, and at the same time, has lead me to spend many unproductive days sitting at my laptop hypnotized by the awesomeness of my Twitter stream.  If the Twitter stream is right in front of my face while I’m sending an email, I would never get things done.  Definitely keep this Gmail feature away from you inbox!

3. 10 Simple Ways to Show Kindness Online

Brett Borders post

I completely agree with:

Point #7 - Make other people look good.  Nothing makes me happier than to be able to retweet a well written post where the author spent a lot of quality time on.  Hence, this post.  I want to make sure the best posts of the week get recognized.

4. Surviving the Twitter Learning Curve

Eric Stoffle post

Best Tip:

Negotiate - It’s ok to unfollow someone.  Don’t feel like you must follow someone to be polite and don’t hesitate to unfollow someone if they’re clogging up your Twitter stream.  Your twitter stream is your house, own it and kick anyone out who interrupts your Twitter Zen.

  • Score: 213

5. The 4 Hour Workday

Scott Young post

Best Tip:

Log your current productivity.  It is so important that you make sure you are hitting your daily goals so that you can measure your improvement and effectiveness.  I used not care about stats and figures; now I’m ALL about them.  And you know what?  My day has increased by at least 50% in terms of work-hour effectiveness.

  • Retweets: 263
  • Score: 180.2

6. Vibram Five Fingers Shoes: The Barefoot Alternative

Tim Ferriss post

Why I love Tim Ferris:

Tim doesn’t just write a post telling you to go buy a product.  He goes into unbelievable detail about why the product will benefit you and what are some cons about the product.  I think the biggest Pro of this seriously sick nasty shoe is that they help improve your posture.

Key Stats:

  • Author: Tim Ferriss
  • Retweets: 145
  • Score: 155

7. Twitter manners- how to write good tweets and be a good twittizen

Janet Fouts post

It baffles me:

I am astonished at how many “How to’s” there still are for Twitter.  What’s even more baffling to me is that the most ReTweeted links on Twitter are posts that talk about Twitter.  Actually, that shouldn’t surprise me at all…

8. The Tao of Online Marketing

Brian Clark post

You win with Zen:

If you incorporate the topic of “simplicity” or “zen” in your post, then you’ll be sure to get a hit.

Go above and beyond for your readers:

Wow, this is the first time I’ve seen something like this on a blog post.  At the end of the post, he has an audio version that his readers can download and listen to.  Isn’t that just going above and beyond for your readers!  You go Bob!

Really enjoyed Brett’s post on Social Media Rockstar (I think I contributed at least one RT to that effort). It goes to the heart of what’s really awesome about SM: Helping others and a general sense of decency. Business has never been warm and fuzzy (far from it) but SM seems to be based on your ability to get along with the most people and direct them towards common goals. You can’t be a dick anymore.

Great list Jun :).

I really like 10 Simple Ways to Show Kindness Online. If everyone does all of those, we would have a better…internet :)

This list is actually really helpful. Will there be something like this every week?

Joseph,

Appreciate you including my post on kindness here. The top blogs publish a lot of really good content and they deserve their well-known status but I appreciate you reaching out to less visible blogs that are trying just as hard ;) I am recovering from surgery and kind of out of it, but promise to get blogging as soon as I can (maybe later this week).
