Allie Osmar - Be creative and create your own career

Twitter: @allieo
Websites: http://thecreativecareer.com/
Career: Edelman Digital: Developing global online lessons for the company to integrate all things digital
Passions: “I think it’s important to balance computers and technology with offline activities - things that won’t let you hit the “undo” button. In my spare time, I’ve been getting into painting and photography. I get my best ideas when I step back and reflect.”
I first met Allie last year when she reached out to me to interview me for her podcast - The Creative Career. I was super excited because I had never really been interviewed before, and since I was relatively a new blogger, I felt that it was my opportunity to shine! Well, a year has passed, and it’s time for me to return the favor in video form!
Allie is such an amazing person and I greatly admire her for being able to transition from a job where she was unhappy, to a job that she absolutely loves without even having to interview for it! She was able to leverage her personal brand and social media to create a position at Edelman Digital that no one else in the company has!
You’re also going to find out about the personal side of Allie and really understand what she’s passionate about outside of work. If you’re a professional with a love for teaching others, then I highly suggest you sign up for Allie’s mentorship program so that you can guide and give advice to undergraduates about to make the leap into the real world. Enjoy the interview!
Conversation Breakdown:
2:11 - Tell me about your “controversial” post titled Sunday Night Gut Check - Know When to Quit Poor Leadership

3:30 - What did you think about Rebecca Thorman’s post about Burning Bridges with a Previous Employer?
Allie feels that she “burned bridges” with the necessary people, but has NOT “burned bridges” with the people who really matter. In the end, the way that she got her position was through projects that she was doing outside of work, so she didn’t need her previous employers reference.
4:24 - What advice can you give another millennial who wants to write a similar post about a previous employer?
Wait for time to pass, and most importantly, make the post a learning experience rather than a rant. Find an angle where you’re not complaining; rather, you’re actually showing the “light” and what everyone can learn from it.
5:39 - How did you use social media to get a career that you really love?
Allie joined a community called PR Open Mic and did some podcasts with them. Her goal was to help students through her podcast. Just 4 days after she joined the organization, Edelman reached out to her because they liked what she was doing with podcasting and social media.
8:01 - If you never had to work a day in your life again, what would you be doing?
Allie would move into the woods and run a summer camp.
Isn’t that just so amazing? Allie really has something inside of her that pushes her to help others rather than just help herself. I really admire this about her and know that the amazing karma points that she has built up will greatly help her throughout her life. I need to do this more!
9:01 - Tell me about the mentorship program that you’ve created
If you’re a professional who wants to mentor undegraduates, join her mentorship program here
11:11 - What are you passionate about outside of your career?
Allie has a personal blog that you can check out here.
Allie wants to take her life off-line as well. She’s getting into painting and photography to get a well-rounded experience and do things in life where you can’t hit the “undo” button.
12:44 - Have you always had a love for painting and photography?
Allie wanted to do graphic design and fashion back in high school. She’s always been artistic and now wants to take her hobbies to the next level.
Thanks for the link and including me in the question, Jun.
I love Allie’s answers probably because she reminds me a lot of myself - ha. And I didn’t know about the personal blog, excited to check that out.
Great interview, Allie!
@allieo is amazing, and what a great interview. she’s rocking edelmen, along with a few other local bloggers, by spreading the word for our 20 Something Blogger’s Ultimate Meetup in Chicago in June. i was overwhelmed by the enthusiasm over there in talking about not just the event, but bloggers in general with corporate advertising clients. that’s the trenches, in a way…the young people who are trying to turn heads towards the online conversation and bring forward thinking brands into that conversation. lots of us say it should happen, but some are out there making it happen.
i love that you keep having bloggers on that i “know”:)
Love this episode! I love how every week the interviewee’s get better and better. This was a great segment because she brings up a great point which is balance in your lifestyle.
“things that won’t let you hit the “undo” button”
Great work!
