Passions: “I’m passionate about PR, the potential of social media, movies, biographies, MUSIC!, health care communication and improving education in America”
I was really impressed with my interview with James. I was not too familiar with his blog beforehand, but now that I’ve gotten to know him a lot better, I’ve added his blog to my Google Reader list. If you’re interested in creating social change through social media, then you really need to reach out to James and build a relationship because he is definitely going to make big things happen.
I love doing these interviews because I get to meet people from across the nation that I normally would not be able to meet face-to-face. I can’t wait until I do my across-the-states road trip so that I can meet all of my favorite bloggers in person! James, when I’m in DC, we’re definitely hanging out!
Conversation Breakdown:
1:47 - What makes your blog different from all of the other marketing and PR blogs?
James’ posts are unique because they’re very similar to what he would say to you in a face-to-face conversation. He puts a lot of his personality into each post, makes it conversational, and tries to take topics to the next level.
2:45 - What did you mean when you wrote “Social Networks will be like air”?
James believes that social networks will become like air because they will become intertwined into every segment of the internet. He points out that at the time he wrote the post, he was talking to a lot of professionals who felt that social networks should be banned from the workplace and should be used for personal use only.
4:19 - What would you say to professionals who believe that social media belongs outside of the working environment?
James believes that there is a social media application for EVERYONE. Before you jump in and start signing up to every single web 2.0 site, take the time and think about the long-term strategy of the site. If you’re a B2B company, maybe you won’t use social media to market to your clients. An alternative can be for internal communication.
6:00 - There are a lot of professionals that feel social media is ONLY for marketing to 20 year olds. How can a company that targets an age range of 35+ use social media?
James gives the example that his friend’s Grandfather is using Twitter on a regular basis. Though not every single grandparent will adopt Twitter, there are still those key people in every demographic that use social media tools and that can be engaged online by your business.
7:58 - Now that you’re a more experienced blogger, is there anything that you would have done differently in your blogging career?
James would come up with a few themes centered around each post. He loves music and would love to integrate a new song with each blog post so that the theme of his blog would be based around his love for music.
9:48 - What do you see in the future of blogging
James wants to see:
- The use of blogging for social applications and solving social issues
- The use of blogging in education
11:28 - What advice would you give to someone who is just starting his blog?
The most important quality is to be disciplined. You should make a plan and really map out what your goals are for your blog and stick to it. Another great pointer that James gives is to email yourself blog ideas throughout the day.
12:30 - What would you like to say to your readers?
He wants to know if there are any topics that you would like to see him write about. He is very open to writing about anything that you’re interested in and enourages you to reach out to him.
12:55 - What is in store in 2009 for James Walker?
James wants to pursue speaking engagments about how to strategically use social media for your career or business and wants to continue mentoring undergraduates.

Awesome job James! Definitely one to watch. Thanks for setting this up!
James is quite impressive! He really knows what he is talking about.
Actually a lot of older folks are on Twitter, especially politicians who don’t want to participate in meetings
