Quick Update: CarlMic is really @CarlosMic.
One day while cruising on the Twitter stream, I notice a Tweet from a friend that says, “… twittershouldhireme.com.” I’m like, “oh, this could be interesting.” I never really chatted with Jamie before this interview. I knew her blog from Brazen Careerist and may have commented on her posts once or twice before.
I check out her site and am instantly amazed with what she is doing. I couldn’t believe that no one had done this before! Such an amazing and creative way to use social media to get a social media job. The moment I saw TwitterShouldHireMe.com I knew that she needed to be on Awesome Bloggers.
I had a blast interviewing her and I know you will have a blast as well when you watch us interact. You better be coming with us to the Web 2.0 Expo this April 1st in SF! Here is the free registration code.
Enjoy the interview!
Conversation Breakdown:
1:24 - How did your blogging life start?
Jamie has been blogging since 1999… wow! After Jamie quit her most recent job, she decided that she wanted her blog to get to the next level so she started hustling and really making an effort to create a community around her blog.
2:15 - What inspired you to create TwitterShouldHireMe.com?
Jamie was inspired to create a creative way to get herself a job after she saw someone post ads on their laptop. She really wanted to work at Twitter, and then all of a sudden “TwitterShouldHireMe” popped into her head. That night she stayed up till 6am designing and developing the site.
The response has been unbelivable. At one point she became the 70th most retweeted person on Twitter and she received over 28,000 page views in a matter of days.
4:21 - @CarlMic | What will you do if you don’t get the Twitter job?
Jamie has had a few offers from other companies ever since creating the site. Her life will definitely NOT be over if she doesn’t get the job. She’s just taking it one step at a time and enjoying the moment.
5:21 - What would you like to see in the future of blogging?
Jamie wishes that people would comment more intelligently. She wants people to debate, but she doesn’t like it went people bash and attack a blogger. Disagree with the content but don’t bash the blogger.
6:29 - @NorCross @RyanStephens | Was there any negative fallout after writing the “Quit After 2 Weeks” post?
Here is the post for those who haven’t read it yet.
Jamie is strong and stands behind her post. She doesn’t regret writing it because she wrote it from the heart and believes in every word that she wrote.
8:33 - What advice would you give to those who are hesitant about blogging because of the fear of a backlash?
If you’re not ready to take the heat, then you shouldn’t be writing controversial post. Know yourself and understand if you can handle putting your personal life online. If you CAN tackle those tough issues, then “brick it on!”
10:49 - @LimanLive | Are you single?
Living the single life… oh yea!
12:20 - Looking back, is there anything that you would do differently with blogging?
The only thing that Jamie would have done differently is start blogging earlier.
13:00 - In 2009, what is in store for Jamie Varon?
Jamie wants to win a Bloggie! Nominate Jamie Varon!
13:55 - What did it feel like to go viral and really get that sudden exponential level of exposure?
It blew her away! She was completely astonished with the level of exposure that this has gotten her. Now she’s a little nervous because everyone is watching her moves and now she feels the pressure to do another great thing.
15:14 - What would you like to say to all of your viewers who are watching?
She wants to thank all of you. Jamie welcomes a great debate so if you disagree with her, she ready to duke it out with you!
wow! Jamie is a true inspiration. I just read her blog post about “2 weeks” and I love it. It has really motivated me to look at my current career and re-evaluate it. Am I really happy? I now understand that I don’t have to stay at a job just because I feel I have to.
Checked out the code and I really want to go to the Web 2.0 Expo w/ you guys. Hopefully I can!
Love what you’re doing and keep interviewing Awesome Bloggers!
Hi Leslie, Jamie is definitely awesome. You should really reach out to her and get to know her.
If you do come to web 2.0, we’re hanging out for sure! Gotta hit up Supper Club right!
Send me your blog when you start it.
Why is the interviewee’s answers in the third person?
Hey Jun, Thanks for the link. I think the takeaways from your interview, (which I enjoyed tremendously) is the fact that people need to create a back-up plan, instead of waiting and to see what develops. That and Jamie mentioning the need not to bash people when you disagree with their posts.
Best of luck with all!
Rachel
@Rachel - Most definitely. Never put all your eggs in one basket.
I love debates, but I never like it when people attack the blogger personally.
Would love to stay in touch Rachel
Great interview, I really enjoyed watching it. Definitely the most important thing for me is that people need to be more civil and intelligent on their comments. It’s true that commenters, especially when they are anonymous, can just bash the blogger…and I think it scares a lot of people out there away from blogging. But it’s true that this isn’t going to change anytime soon so people better get used to it.
@Akhila - I think one of the best things about being a blogger is that you naturally develop a thick skin and you’re able to take criticism much better. Even more importantly, you have to develop the skill of learning how to debate and how to see topics from all points of view.
I’m thinking of going to Europe at the end of this year or early next year. Will you still be there or are you coming home anytime soon?
- Jun
I agree. But at the same time, one of the reasons I created my blog was to get “dissension”. When I talk to people (friends / colleagues) one on one and they (being nice) don’t like to disagree.
However, when I post on a public domain forum (and import to Linkedin or Facebook) I find people feel more comfortable giving intelligent feedback.
I like blogging in that sense because you put a stake in the ground to let people debate openly. I like Jamie Veron’s comment to the second question is reflective of how most of us feel.
Most definitely Josh. Blogging is all about claiming your ground and having people either join you or try to take it from you… hahaha, sounds so intense, huh?
Checked out your blog. Like what you’re doing man, keep it up!
@Jun, first of all I want to say I love Viralogy and what you’re doing here (how have I not visited your site yet?!) Would love to talk more and continue the conversation
@Jamie we’ve been talking through all the platforms possible from e-mail to our blogs, but I’m so glad you were featured here, Your topic is timely and exciting. I like to see support, even as it’s remote and from all over. Can’t wait to hear about your interview and how it all goes down, because I know wherever you land (hopefully Twitter) you rock.
Very good interview - great idea here - and the only comment I have is that your voice needs to be a bit louder in the mix. Other than that, great job, and keep it up!
Rex
btw, our siliconANGLE blog unfortunately underwent an unfortunate incident earlier this week, which we’ll reveal all hopefully soon. So pardon the under construction look at this time, as well as the non friendly URL:

Rex
@Grace Boyle - thank you so much! I am working my ass off trying to provide the best content for the community. Would love to set up a time to chat.
Jun.Loayza [at] Viralogy.com
@Rex Dixon - No problemo at all. Thanks for the feedback. Let me know when you unveil Silicon Angle and I’ll tweet it out to my peeps
@Jun (Sorry if I’m getting this notation wrong… I’m new to Twitter style feeds).
Actually I just had a relatively intense discussion with a friend. It’s not that I’m trying to be so “in your face”, but I feel like we need a bit of conflict to grow. We don’t have to be adversarial. Can’t we argue intellectually as friends?
- I can admit I’m wrong. Explain to me why, and make me smarter!
@Josh Wong - I love your style of thinking. Yu-kai and I have a policy: no idea ever gets implemented in our company without being thoroughly destroyed. If it survives destruction, then we implement.
It’s the only way a person can grow and a company can succeed
Great Video! I hope Twitter hires you!!
Jamie is such a great inspiration!
I you my fan or Jamie’s? Or both?… hahaha
