Free Life Coaching Session with Jenny Blake

I found Jenny Blake through the Twittersphere earlier this year.  We tweeted a couple times, nothing too serious.  Then back in March, I went up to SF for the Web 2.0 Expo and met her for the first time in real life!  Have you experienced that before?  Have you met your online, Twitter friends in real life?  It’s both exciting and a little nerve-wrecking because you have no idea what to expect.

All I can say is that it was an absolute blast hanging out with Jenny!  She’s a super fun person, but little did I know that she was such an accomplished woman.  This interview really opened my eyes to what she has be able to accomplish at such a young age.

She has joined a startup, dropped out then graduated from UCLA, works at Google, is a life coach, is writing a book, ran a marathon, and bought a house all on her own.  This is a great interview that shows you where her motivation and drive come from and how you can accomplish great things as well.

Conversation Breakdown

1:34 - Where did the idea for your blog come from?

Jenny started her blog to teach others about all of the experiences she has gone through at such a young age.

3:10 - What did you decide to leave school to join the startup?

Jenny is a planner, and she set herself up to do something different.  The startup opportunity came at a great time, and she decided to take the chance and go for it.

5:10 - How is money just a means?

People think that they just want to be rich, but they don’t think about why, or what that would allow them to do.  Think about what you want to do in life, because you’ll realize you don’t need that much money to accomplish it.

6:04 - How is being motivated by achievements a blessing and a curse?

Being motivated and driven is awesome, but there comes a time when you feel exhausted and overwhelmed.  Jenny has decided to slow down before she jumps into the next big thing.

7:21 - What was it like to run the Nike marathon?

The training was more fun than the marathon itself.  Believe it or not, Jenny actually trained for it all by herself.

8:17 - What is the book you’re writing about?

The book is about life after college: work, money, friends, family, relationship.  Each chapter will have tips, exercises, quotes, and lessons to become successful after college.

9:16 - Where does the motivation to do so many things come from?

Jenny ultimately wants to share her experiences with others.

10:11 - How does a person find out what she is passionate about?

The most powerful question to ask yourself is, “What do I really want?”  Start a list and really hash out what is that one thing that makes you truly happy.

Join Jenny Blake, Jamie Varon, and me for a Cupcake Tweetup up in SF from June 2-6!!!

Good stuff Jenny and Jun. Jenny, one thing I really like (and I think I speak for the lot of us) about your blog is that you always offer a clear takeaway with your writing. So many people out there are writing and talking about personal growth, becoming a better you, etc. - but very few offer something to really grasp. You present things and then say “Go do it!” Things like writing vision statements, making plans and setting goals seem so cliche and academic, but they really are important to organizing and prioritizing your own life. Visualizing what you want to do and where you want to be is SO important.

One of these days I’ll make it out to Cali (never been in my life - yeah…ever, crazy, I know). And Jun, one of these days I’ll enter into the 21st century and get a webcam, or a laptop with a webcam, whichever comes first!

Thank you SO much for the comments, Matt and Yu-kai! You are too sweet. What can I say, Jun did me justice in this interview!

Matt - you DEFINITELY need to come out to California - I can’t believe you’ve never been! I’m so glad you’ve been finding my posts helpful - you are doing amazing work too, so I’m glad we’ve been able to chat and interact more recently. Let’s get on a skype call soon!

Yu-kai - you are definitely one of my favorite tweeps too :D

Jenny you have such enthusiasm! When we talked before I saw that but in hearing your story again and interacting here, it really was great to hear. I also am really excited to hear more about your book and think it sounds fantastic.

I wish I was in the bay area to join a cupcake tweetup!
