During this interview, Matt gives the advice that if you really want to live the dream, then you’re going to have to work your ass off.  Matt has had to sacrifice a lot to pursue his dream, and he is a clear example of the hard work and hustle that you need to undertake in order to be successful.

He practices what he preaches.  Matt and I met because he left a comment on my blog.  A few emails later, and we had him as a guest on our show.

To do what you love, you’ll have to do what you hate.  Not many people tell you this truth, but Matt knows it because he has lived it.  Enjoy this interview and I know you’re going to learn a lot!

1:11 - Why did you write a post titled “Start doing Shit you Hate”?

Matt knows first hand that if you want to do what you love, you’re going to go through what you hate.

3:23 - So you had to stop doing what you love, do something you hate to generate income, to then go back to doing something you love?

Yup.  Matt would come home exhausted from doing manual labor and then had to go to work to build his company.

4:43 - Is it unfair to ask someone to work 9-5, and then work another 7pm - 2am?

Yes, it’s intense.  Matt was working so hard that he was breaking down, but that’s what you have to do.  You just have to keep hustling.

6:01 - What do you think of lifestyle design?

Tim Ferriss does not work 4 hours a week.  When building his company, Tim was working 90 hours a week.  Only when he had established his company was he able to step back and let the company run by itself.

8:05 - What advice would you give to someone who loves to drive cars?  How can the car lover take control of his own life?

Matt gives such great, concrete advice about how a G-String lover can make money!  hahahah, he keeps it PG-rated though

10:52 - What is the first step a person can take to position herself to do something she loves?

The first part, and probably the hardest part, is to figure out what you absolutely love to do.

He also talks about his experiences as an undergrad and how too many undergraduates settle for the path that they’re supposed to take.

Another fantastic interview with someone that I’ve yet to meet or follow, but will surely do so now!

I really connected with the topics that you guys talked about, especially the “immersion” concept about 3/4 of the way through. That’s exactly what I’ve tried to do early on in my blogging career. I had several people tell me that they could read an article almost anywhere about personal finance without seeing my name somewhere in the comments, etc… It enabled me to be an “accepted” member of the community very quickly. They other key is to make sure you are actually passionate about what you are getting into. People can really see through it if you fake it for long enough!

Matt Wilson is one of my favorite young entrepreneurs and i’ve been following him since I created a twitter account.

It does take time to sit down and figure out what you want in life. The people that want to separate themselves from the rest continue to search for answers and define their vision as they move on in life. Most of my college friends have no idea what they want to do after college. I think if they just have some short of idea they can lead themselves to the right direction.

It’s all about creating your opportunity. Great interview Matt!

It is all about creating your own opportunities. People do get lucky, but without the hard work to execute when you are given the chance, you have nothing.

Thanks for the great interview. I recently became a member of Matt’s Under30CEO community. I totally agree that it is important for someone to dig down and find out what that passion is and pursue it relentlessly. It’s tougher than people think to not get distracted. It’s a crazy world. Great interview.

Jun- I’m trying to help those who work in marketing for larger companies. I work for a Fortune 50 and have several people working for me or at least through dotted line relationships. I’m constantly looked to for advice as I’ve moved up relatively quickly and I’d like to share that advice to others…it’s a tough nut to crack working in a large marketing organization with 100s or even 1000s of people well-trained in marketing.
