Conversation Breakdown

1:03 - Tell me about the intersection between dating and careers

Shawn wants to draw a parrellel between dating and the job hunt to make it more accessible to college students

1:50 - What are some of your best analogies?

Shawn finds that recent grads choose a work place based on location.  He says that choosing a career based on location is like approaching a girl and telling her you want to be with her because she’s “hot.”

3:57 - Do you believe that personal branding will be the only way to get a job in 2010?

Shawn believes that personal branding is incredibly important and will be the way to recruit for jobs

5:09 - A lot of people in social media say that you don’t need a resume anymore; the way to get a job is by using social media tools.  Thoughts?

If you’re interviewing with larger companies with formalized recruiting processes, you will need the traditional resume and interview process.

6:31 - Is Gen Y a big job hopper, or does it just seem that way because we talk about it so much?

Shawn believes that this happens for every generation.

8:37 - Gen Y does not want to pay our dues.  What do you think about this?

Shawn believes that “paying your dues” is useful and sometimes necessary to understand how the corporate world works.
