How to Search Engine Optimize a Wordpress Blog (Part 2)
5. Strategic Linking to sculpt page rank
Use: rel=”nofollow”
Example: <a rel=”nofollow” href=”http://twitter.com/Yukai_Chou”>Yu-kai Chou</a>
6. Anchor Text is Super important
If Yukai Chou was smart, he would change all links pointing to his site from:
<a href=”http://yukaichou.com”>Yukai Chou</a>
To:
<a href=”http://yukaichou.com”>Power Coach</a>
Yukai wants to be known as a “Power Coach”, so he should strategically position himself to come up high on Google searches.
7. Optimizing image search
Use: longdesc=”long description” and alt=”very short description”
Example: <img longdesc=”The founder of future delivery” src=”http://yukaichou.com/yukai.jpg” alt=”Yu-kai Chou”>
After watching the vid, please respond to the following in the comments:
- Please ask me any questions that you may have
- Should I make more tutorials? About what?
- Should I make the vids longer or should I make 1 video for each tip?
- Did I go too fast during my video tutorials?
- Are you an Awesome Blogger
Thank you so much for watching my video tutorial. Much Love

Jun. You rock dude! Since implementing steps 1-4 I’ve had a few people already make it to my site via Google search. Something must be working, right?
A lot of great information here - it looks like I’ll be going back through old posts and replenishing the ‘juice’ I was so generously giving away to the Wikipedia and the other big-wigs. Great combo of video tutorials. Very easy to follow and understand (even for those folks who aren’t as tech-savvy). I think you made it very accessible for everyone.
I will keep track of how my SEO improves week-to-week and will keep you in the loop. I think it will be a good experiment to see how it develops over time.
Thanks for taking the time to put this together!
Should I make more tutorials?
Yes
About what?
How about how to use Google Analytics effectively?
Don’t change the length, I think these are perfect.
Question: You mention adding the rel=”nofollow” to your header/sidebar/footer php files - if you take a look at my site, I’ve got links on the top and in the “sidebar” but they do not show up in either of these php files ‘About’ ‘Subscribe’…etc and sidebar ‘Blogroll links’ and what not.
Any idea where to find these? Obviously these are taking juice from my homepage and I would like to restore some of that - just haven’t been able to find where these are located for me to add the =nofollow text.
Thanks for the help.
Jun,
Would it make sense to go back through all my previous posts and implement these steps?
I found the tutorial very helpful and the length/presentation was perfect - especially for someone with no previous knowledge in this area.
You have given me plenty of homework to do!
Jun! When is the next installment of SEO Optimization going up? There has to be so much more that I’m not already doing. As promised, as an update of where my Google traffic has gotten to since implementing these tactics - my (Search Engine) traffic currently represents 14% of the overall - compared to about 1% before ‘taking care of SEO business’. So kudos to you - Search engine traffic continues to improve each day!
Longdesc is for a URL to a page describing the image, not for actual descriptive text. Using it for just descriptive text doesn’t conform to spec and depending on how the indexers are crawling content won’t count towards SEO and if it becomes commonly abused could actually lead to negative pageranking.
I do agree that using alt and title for the descriptive text is imperative for good SEO though!
Hi Jun!!!
I reallllly appreciate the two tutorials you’ve done on SEO with wordpress!! However, I don’t exactly think I am doing the “no follow” step correctly and I was wondering if you could walk me through it when you get a chance?? Thanks!!
