This is an incredible post! I wish I would've found it 2 years ago when it was written! :-)

I absolutely LOVE both of these guys and have for quite a while. I've often thought about how the 2 dovetail.

I don't like to think about them in a verses mentality (although controversy does make a better blog post, so it's forgivable :-)

I think they both do what they love, and they are both wildly successful at it. I think they are both living happily ever after right now. I don't think they look at each other and wonder "who is winning" or "who is better." I don't think these guys even see themselves as remotely close to being competition. Not to mention they're pretty good friends.

My conclusion is:

1) Tim Ferriss is a great resource for helping you create a MUSE
2) Gary Vaynerchuk is a great resource for helping you build your BRAND.
3) A third and slightly less well known component of the equation in my book comes from Chris Guillebeau--WORLD DOMINATION.

I feel like they're all great pieces of a life formula. Number 3 should come after you have successfully created a muse that can generate/automate income and you are establishing your personal brand by regularly creating and contributing to meaningful conversation in your industry.

I disagree with the Tim Ferriss = jerk comments. The fact that Gary has chosen to live his life answering emails does not make Tim a monster because he doesn't. He never promised to answer emails the way that Gary has. The guy is a hard worker and shares awesome, relevant, content. He hasn't been unfair or arrogant. He exposes a lot of his own flops and failures in his writing. 4HWW shares some cool things he found in his journey--if you like it great, if not, NBD.

Bottom line--they can both come to my birthday party.

I see Gary's perspective as a first step to start doing what you like, get motivated, understand that by hustling you can build a solid base. However It seems like Tim's approach comes after you have built a solid foundation. Now you can put the boat on normal speed and watch your business respond-back to your hard work.

Haha, thanks for sharing your experiences. It's good to know that Tim secretly reads what you send it. But like you said, it's good to get a response no? :)

I wouldn't disagree with that. Gary tells you why you should do things, while Tim tells you how you should do them!

Great post!

I've always been a huge Tim Ferriss fan. I sent him a few e-mails, commented a lot on his posts but never was able to reach him. I've had my first "breakthrough" last month when he put my 4HWW case study up in the finalist and I just received by the mail a gift package from Amazon to thank me for having done so. So I guess he's not that bad afterall.

But I agree with you that it's nice when people take the time to answer you. I read that link you put about: 5 Time management tricks I learned from years of hating Tim Ferriss. It's actually pretty funny to see him on another side. Yet, can you blame him to do what he does, he's pretty successful at it! To succeed, you do need to put efforts into it, just that some people do what they love and for them this is not work.

I didn't Gary so I can't really say much but looks that he's a great guy from your post. I love wine too so I better start checking him out.

Cheers!
